As much as many of us out there hate it, it’s that time of year again. Freezing temperatures, snow and ice will characterize the next few months as winter is upon us here in Boise. That leaves many to ask, “What is there to do now that the warm weather is gone?” The opinion of what winter recreation is varies across campus.
Skiing and snowboarding are two major sports that offer endless winter fun. Bogus Basin Ski Resort and Tamarack Resort are two of the major skiing and snowboarding outlets in the area. Many students also plan to take a trip to McCall so they can enjoy the snow.
Ashley Erickson, 19, plans to spend a great deal of time snowboarding as well as working at Bogus Basin during the winter. Another Boise State student, Geoff Renstrom, 20, plans to fill his winter with skiing locally and in McCall, as he will not be working until next semester.
Sledding offers an easy way to enjoy the snow, especially for those people who cannot ski or snowboard. Similar to sledding, tubing is offered at Bogus Basin. Along with brisk morning runs, Robyn Hewitt, 20, plans to go sledding at least a few times this season for winter recreation.
The cold weather here in Boise, as well as the snow and ice, will force some students who prefer the warm weather indoors by the fireplace. Reading books and watching movies will be a part of many students’ next few months. Heather Servatius, 18, says that her winter months include curling up by the fireplace and enjoying a good read. She skis as well, but prefers the warmth indoors. Renstrom also plans to see a few movies this winter and cannot wait for “Rocky Balboa,” the new movie in the Rocky series starring Sylvester Stallone.
Other students on campus are going to travel during the winter vacation from school. The most common destination that Boise State students are planning to go is to the Fiesta Bowl in Ariz. where Boise State will be playing for a BCS title. Tom Otte, 21, has France and Germany on his agenda for the break. Otte will also be conditioning for spring sports and spending some time snowboarding. A.J. Ogden, 19, will be traveling to Kansas and Utah over the break. He will also be working and snowboarding.
The Treasure Valley offers quite a bit more for people to do with their winter time, such as Idaho IceWorld, an ice-skating rink located on Eisenman Rd. near exit 57 on I-84. Public skate sessions are inexpensive to take part in and offer a few hours of winter recreation.
As much as the winter season offers a ton of recreational activities, it can be stressing as well. The holidays are coming up and preparation for them is taking place now. Christmas shopping, decorating inside and out and family gatherings are underway. Christmas shopping can be detrimental to many people’s budgets and family gatherings can be nerve-racking. Not to mention that the dream of having the best decorations in the neighborhood has always been a stress.
Although the weather outside is frightful, students’ winter months don’t have to be. From snowboarding and skiing to watching movies, reading and traveling, there is so much to do this season.
