The Health Promotion Program administered by Professor Caile Spear of the Kinesiology Department and Students Program Board has scheduled the 10th annual "Recreation, Education, and Awareness Through Community Health" Fair for Wednesday, Nov. 15. Open to Boise State members and the community, this event will take place in the Jordan Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will provide free health screening and information on healthy alternatives.

Vendors, BSU organizations and supporters will set up booths, including Central District Health Department, 24-hour Fitness, Campus Rec. and Compulsive Eaters Anonymous. Booths like these will provide nutritional and dentistry information; they will also offer fitness and financial planning information. Along with vendors and other organizations, 17 health promotion students and other volunteers will also help in this event.

Flu shots, glucose tests, fitness assessments, hearing and vision screening and spine screenings are a few of the tests that will be administered at this event. The health promotion students have also organized a five-minute Bod Pod body composition test. This test measures body fat and lean muscle mass with air displacement with a 1 to 2 percent error rate and 98 percent accuracy. Those interested must pre-register for this free test. In 1996, 35 vendors showed up and only 500 people attended. Last year, the health fair had nearly 75 vendors with 1835 people in attendance. Spear expects around the same number this year.

"The mission of the 10th Annual REACH Health and Wellness Fair is to partner with our community to promote healthy lifestyles," Spear said.

"This is a great event for everyone. As a result of the information and services we provide people have quit smoking, found out they had early onset osteoporosis and we [were] able to take action, people have started exercise programs, lost weight, gotten flu shots, found positive ways to deal with their stress, got help for family members with mental illness or drug problems, and learned many ways to improve their health."

Those who attend and participate may win door prizes which include signed soccer balls, footballs and volleyballs, massages, Bogus Basin ski lift tickets and much more.
