The World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame announced its class of 2006 Tuesday on the Boise State University campus. The newest class of inductees will consist of Major League Baseball Hall of Fame member Harmon Killibrew, Pro Football Hall of Fame member Steve Largent and retired professional basketball player Steve Smith.
Humanitarian Board of Directors President, Larry Maneely, announced the class of ’06 in Allen Noble Hall of Fame in
Bronco Stadium.
Allen Noble Hall is currently the location of the Humanitarian Hall of Fame and the Boise State Athletic Department Hall of Fame.
The organization is working toward constructing a permanent building in Bronco Stadium to house the history of its honorary members. The Hall also hopes to provide a curriculum to BSU students that will work to promote the ethics of its Hall of Fame inductees.
“It’s wonderful we are able to find these great athletes around the world,” Maneely said. “If we can put in place something that will ensure that we are teaching the next generation of teachers about getting involved in their community, doing it the right way and giving back. We feel we’ve done something that will be leaving its mark on the country and around the world for generations to come.”
The class of ’06 is the eleventh induction class into the Hall of Fame. While no member has been recognized as an elite member of the Hall, all three of the newest inductees certainly live up to the standard set by their predecessors.
Harmon Killibrew was born and raised in Payette, which makes him the first Idaho native to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Killibrew was a 13-time All-Star in the Major Leagues. Steve Smith won an NBA Championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003. Smith was also a member of the 2000 Olympic Gold Medal basketball team. Steve Largent played 14 seasons in the NFL, all with the Seattle Seahawks. Largent (5-11, 187) set six career records in the NFL and was named to seven Pro Bowls.
“We are extremely proud of the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame Class of 2006,” Maneely said. “They have set the bar high in competition and with their humanitarian efforts, challenge us all to do more, whenever and wherever we have the opportunity.”
The Arbiter will highlight all three men and their humanitarian accomplishments during the time leading up to the event. The induction ceremony will take place Nov. 30 at Mountain View High School in Meridian.
Tickets to the induction ceremony will be available through “select-a-seat”, Idahotickets.com and the Humanitarian Hall of Fame website: www.sportshumanitarian.com.
