After serving as Associated Students of Boise State University chief of staff for about five weeks, Tim Flaherty resigned from the position Monday. Flaherty said he’s exiting on good terms with ASBSU President Joe Holladay, who appointed him as chief of staff in early October. Flaherty cited personal reasons for his resignation.
“There’s a list of things I’ve been wanting to do,” Flaherty said. He said his job didn’t provide the time to do those things.
Other projects Flaherty said he wants to work on include several campus-related activities. Flaherty said he wants to focus on helping his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epilson, become a chartered organization. He said he will also work with students to reestablish a club that encourages school spirit at campus events. Flaherty said he also wants to work in conjunction with student veterans to build a veteran memorial on the BSU campus. Flaherty said a BSU veteran memorial was removed 10 years ago when Albertsons Library was built.
Flaherty said he worked an average of 40 to 60 hours per week as chief of staff, leaving limited time for homework, other projects and church.
Flaherty announced his resignation, which was effective Monday, in an e-mail he sent on Friday. He said ASBSU doesn’t have a two-week policy for resignation notifications.
“Joe [Holladay] and I spoke about this last week and reached an agreement to do it that way,” Flaherty said of his sudden departure.
“I could kind of see it coming, but it was somewhat sudden,” Holladay said of Flaherty’s resignation.
As a junior intending to receive a finance degree,
“I’m sad to be leaving,” he said. “I loved working for ASBSU and the students of Boise State. I hope to continue and serve the students of Boise State in the future.”
Flaherty plans to remain on several BSU committees, including the Cultural Center Advisory Board, the Student Union Board of Governors, the Student Policy and Appellate Board and the Publications Board.
“I’ll serve on these committees until Joe Holladay asks me not to or until March 31 [when the terms expire],” Flaherty said.
Holladay said he intends to keep Flaherty on some of the committees, but may appoint an ASBSU member to others that Holladay wants to keep a closer tab on.
Flaherty said his position on those committees will be as an at-large student, representing the students at the pleasure of the president.
Flaherty said he also hopes to continue his involvement in the ASBSU executive branch next year as the student body president.
“Yes, I do intend to run for ASBSU president next year, but I am not actively campaigning right now because of ASBSU rules,” he said.
Flaherty said ASBSU limits the time period for campaigning to the spring.
Holladay said he hopes to have the position filled within the next three weeks. Three applicants from within ASBSU had already applied for chief of staff as of Monday, Holladay said.
“I hope to fill the position as soon as possible,” Holladay said.
Flaherty was formerly the ASBSU director of student affairs and became the chief of staff follwing Jared Martin’s resignation in September.
