The Associated Students of Boise State University Senate approved two executive cabinet members during its meeting Tuesday, Oct. 4. Timothy Flaherty and Mike Williams were appointed ASBSU chief of staff and director of student affairs, respectively.

Flaherty is assuming the post vacated by Jared Martin. In a letter dated Sept. 23, 2005, Martin resigned from the position due to personal reasons. Flaherty was formerly the director of student affairs, and Mike Williams will join ASBSU’s executive cabinet as the new director.

Senators approved the two appointments with a vote of 10 approving, one opposing and two abstentions.

Senators also discussed how gallery comments and voting should take place in future legislative decisions.

“I don’t think we should be hearing gallery comments pertaining to legislation on the same day we vote on it,” Sen. Brandon Stoker said. “It’s just not wise to mix emotions with voting.”

Senators did not decide to take any action concerning gallery comments. They did, however, vote on when third readings of legislation should take place. Two senators expressed conflicts with Thursday night meetings because of evening classes.

On Thursday, Sept. 29, voting on a resolution did not take place until after 6 p.m., when the meeting is supposed to end.

Sen. LaTisha Clark asked senators to consider holding caucuses during Thursdays and third readings and voting during Tuesday meetings. The motion failed with six senators in dissent and five in approval.

ASBSU senators meet again today in The Forum of the Student Union Building at 4:40 p.m.
