Big weapon Hass looking for revenge on BSU

In 2003, Boise State was handed its only loss of the season by the Oregon State Beavers. With the clock running out Oregon State was faced with a fourth down and short situation, the Beavers decided to go for the first down. A quick snap and a forward lunge by quarterback Derek Anderson was the call. As Anderson pushed the ball forward, Boise State swiped the ball loose and quickly recovered the fumble. It looked as if the Broncos would have one last chance to move the ball into field goal territory, and try for the win. The opportunity to go for the win was quickly dismissed when the referees decided that Anderson’s forward progress was stopped giving a first down to OSU. Outcome: BSU’s only loss of the season.

Revenge was on the Broncos mind last season, when they would play host to the visiting Beavers. Revenge is exactly what the Broncos received. Falling to an early 14-0 deficit at the end of the first quarter the Broncos put 20 on the scoreboard in the second quarter, and went on to a 53-34 victory in front of the largest crowd in BSU history.

The Broncos dominated almost every category of last season’s game. The one area where the Beavers were able to hurt BSU was through the air. While Boise State racked up 246 passing yards, the Beavers collected 411. The main weapon in the OSU air attack was junior wide receiver, Mike Hass.

Hass hurt the BSU secondary finishing the game with 12 receptions, 293 yards, and three touchdowns. Hass’s accomplishments last season earned him a spot on the All-Pac-10 team, he was also an AP Third Team All-American.

Hass looks to add to his resume this year, with opportunities to break a number of OSU receiving records. Among the records Hass could break are career receiving yards, and career touchdowns.

Hass arrived at Oregon State as a walk-on in 2001, where he would redshirt his first season. In 2002 Hass played in 12 of the team’s 13 games, mainly on special teams. In 2003 Hass finally became a scholarship player. Hass started all twelve games that season, collecting 1,013 yards and seven touchdowns.

Hass will come into this season without former 3-year starter Derek Anderson. Anderson is the only quarterback in OSU history to lead his team to three consecutive bowl victories, and earning two bowl offensive MVP awards. Anderson also holds OSU records for touchdown passes (79), and passing yards (11,249).

Oregon State will also be without their junior tight end Joe Newton, who had a muscle tear in his lower leg surgically repaired. With Newton out Hass will have the opportunity to be the main threat through the air this Saturday in Corvallis.
