‘Punk Rock Holocaust’ is far from Oscar-worthy

The Vans Warped Tour is known for giving out free stuff, especially if you are helping with the bands. Of all the free things I received while on the tour, the lamest-and yet most interesting-was the DVD “Punk Rock Holocaust.”

Starring Kevin Lyman and bands like Atmosphere, Bowling For Soup, The Used, and The Kids Of Widney High, this movie is a faux horror film made over the course of the 2003 Warped Tour.

With what could be the worst acting in recent times, this slasher flick is more of a home movie than an Indy film. Defiantly low in budget, the escapades of murdered Warped Tour patrons and fellow punk rockers are filmed Troma-style with poor lighting/audio. It is a perfect example of what happens when people say, “Hey! Let’s make a movie.”

As a young reporter trying to figure out who is behind the hundreds of grizzly homicides, Lyman either conspires or argues, it is never really clear which, with the head of an evil record company, as the plot takes its 90-minute course.

Intermittently broken up by performances by Warped Tour bands, the film shows many acts from the ’03 summer, as they are featured or murdered. A subplot is sort-of established about the pitfalls of corporate rock, but it is relatively unclear.

As Boise State’s Dr. Peter Lutze often says, “What is the message being told in this movie?” One can sit back and say there is no message in “Punk Rock Holocaust.”

If there is a question to be posed, it is, “Why am I watching this?” Even then, you might have to be on some drug to get through the whole film. Both pot and hard liquor could suffice.

This DVD was given to the bands and crew on tour, and I don’t think the film was ever intended to be released to the public. If you stumble across “Punk Rock Holocaust,” go ahead and watch it, but please don’t pay money for viewing it.

If you would like a copy, I am sure you can contact the filmmakers at www.SpringmanRecords.com.
