This weekend the Broncos take their show, and their first ever
top-10 BCS ranking, on the road as they travel to play the San Jose
State Spartans Saturday morning at 10:02 a.m.
Game time was moved because ESPN decided to pick up the coverage
due to the Broncos (8-0, 5-0 Western Athletic Conference) still
being undefeated and possessing a perfect record on ESPN televised
games. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and also locally on
KBCI-Channel 2.
The Broncos will be following one of the most impressive wins in
school history. BSU Head Coach Dan Hawkins admitted that the win
two weeks ago was about as close to perfection as a team can get.
This from a man that preaches perfection like it is going out of
style. But even after that, the team went back to the drawing board
to ensure that they do not slow down coming into the final three
games of conference play.
“We just go back to the individual technique,” Hawkins
said.
The Broncos are a perfect 5-0 following a bye week under the helm
of Hawkins and still boast the nation’s longest winning
streak at 20 games. The Broncos also moved up two spots in both
national polls. The Broncos are now 15th in the Associated Press
Poll and 13th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Broncos also
made their first top-10 ranking in school history in the BCS poll,
moving up another two spots after loses to Miami and Tennessee last
weekend.
The Spartans (2-6, 1-4 WAC) will host the Broncos after losing four
straight since their historic win over Rice on Oct. 2. Leading the
Spartans is running back Tyson Thompson. The junior leads the
Spartans with 743 yards rushing, which is third in the WAC this
season. Quarterback Dale Rogers trails only Broncos quarterback
Jared Zabransky in quarterback rating in the WAC, but averages only
141.6 yards passing per game.
The Spartans program has been in turmoil for a few years now, and
it’s not getting any better. The team ranks in the bottom ten
in the nation in three categories this season. Their rushing
defense is ranked 114th in the nation, giving up 236 yards per
game. Their punting is 107th, and their scoring defense gives up
39.6 yards per game.
None of these statistics bode well for the Spartans. The Broncos
are the most prolific scoring team in the nation, and their rushing
offense is second in the WAC, while the team has returned two punts
for touchdowns.
The game time will be the earliest of the season for the Broncos,
and is a kink in the weekly planner for Hawkins and staff, but they
are making due.
“We are just trying to get (the team) to change their clocks
and get them up early,” Hawkins said.
