


The Western Athletic Conference had 9 players selected in the
2004 NFL Draft over the weekend, including two each from Hawaii,
Louisiana Tech and Nevada. Warrior defensive lineman Travis LaBoy
was the first WAC player selected when he went to Tennessee in the
second round. Last year, LaBoy had 76 tackles and led the WAC in
sacks with 13. He was named the WAC is defensive player of the
year.
The next WAC player drafted was Fresno State wide receiver Bernard
Berrian, who was picked by Chicago in the third round. Berrian was
second in the WAC in all-purpose yards with 135.6 per game. He
averaged 47.7 yards receiving per game, 24.3 yards per kickoff
return and 10.2 yards per punt return in 2003. Nevada defensive
lineman Jorge Cordova was also chosen in the third round by
Jacksonville. Cordova had 97 tackles and 11.5 sacks last
season.
On Sunday, six more WAC players were drafted. Hawaii defensive
lineman Isaac Sopoaga, Louisiana Tech quarterback Luke McCown and
UTEP offensive lineman Trey Darilek were taken in the fourth round
by San Francisco, Cleveland and Philadelphia, respectively. In the
fifth round, Jacksonville selected Louisiana Tech place-kicker Josh
Scobee and Cincinnati took wide receiver Maurice Mann of Nevada.
San Jose State tight end, Courtney Anderson, was taken in the
seventh round by Oakland.
The WAC’s offensive player of the year in 2003, Boise State
quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie was not drafted but did sign as a free
agent with Chicago. Also signing free agent contracts, as of Monday
morning, were Louisiana Tech linebacker Antonio Crow
(Indianapolis), Tulsa wide receiver Romby Bryant (Arizona) and SMU
cornerback Jonas Rutledge (Tennessee).
