TOKYO — A few enterprising New York Yankees fans successfully

executed the “Roll Call’’ from the left-field

bleachers, and of course, the Yankees themselves were wearing their

pinstripes. Rarely has a visiting team been made to feel so much at

home.

But the clincher came in the arrival of the Yankees’ most

public fan.

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani joined Japan’s

prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, in throwing out the ceremonial

first pitches before Tuesday night’s season opener at the

Tokyo Dome. Giuliani watched the game with Yankees officials as

their club took an 8-3 beating at the hands of the Tampa Bay Devil

Rays.

“I can’t think of anything that solidifies the very

strong and enduring friendship between the United States and Japan

than our mutual interest in this great sport of

baseball,’’ Giuliani said in a pregame news

conference.
