What a difference a week made for the Boise State offense. A

week after committing four turnovers and rushing for just 70 yards

on 42 attempts in the first scrimmage of the spring, Boise

State’s offense was impressive Saturday morning in the second

scrimmage.

The offense scored four touchdowns, rushed for nearly 98 yards

on just 25 carries, while three Bronco quarterbacks combined to

complete 18-of-28 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns.

Boise State’s number-one offense, with redshirt freshman

Jared Zabransky at the helm, scored on the first series of the

scrimmage. The offense went to the bag of tricks and scored on a

26-yard pass from tailback Donny Heck to Tim Gilligan. Zabransky

led the 70-yard drive completing big passes to both T.J. Acree and

Jerry Smith. Zabransky finished the scrimmage completing 8-of-15

passes for 146 yards. He did through two interceptions, both picked

off in the red zone.

Boise State’s other redshirt freshman quarterback

looked impressive as well. Legedu Naanee, working with the second

team offense, completed 5-of-6 passes for 43 yards and a touchdown

and an interception. Naanee hooked up with junior Tony McPherson

three times, including a 17-yard touchdown strike.

Junior quarterback Mike Sanford faired well in the scrimmage as

he completed 5-of-7 passes for 96 yards and a scrimmage ending

70-yard touchdown pass to McPherson

McPherson led a big day for Bronco receivers, catching six

passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Jerry Smith added

four catches for 68 yards, while Gilligan and T.J. Acree each made

a pair of catches.

Boise State’s other touchdown came from an unlikely

source. Walk on freshman running back Brett Denton broke a tackle

at the line of scrimmage and race 31 yards for a touchdown. Denton

led the Broncos with 50 yards rushing on just four carries.

Sophomore Jeff Carpenter added 23 yards on three carries, while

Heck had 18 yards on five carries and freshman Jon Helmandollar

gained 12 yards on five carries.

It wasn’t all offense as the defense made a number of big

plays. Three freshmen – Gerald Alexander, Chad McKibben, and

Korey Hall – picked off passes with McKibben returning his 42

yards. Sophomores Chris Barrios and Jason Wardlow, and senior Wes

Nurse had sacks for the Broncos.
