Albertson’s Library is scheduled to remain open 24 hours a day during finals week. To ensure student safety, ASBSU is working to fund the necessary security. The extended hours will begin on Sunday, Dec. 15 and last until Thursday, Dec. 19.
Janet Strong, assistant library director, said the library is extending its hours upon student requests. Strong said students indicated to library administrators that 24-hour library access would help with extra study time during finals.
The library will have a security officer on duty during extended hours. ASBSU hopes to provide $680 to the library to fund the extra security.
“Security people will be available to walk people to their cars,” Strong said.
Strong said having security during the extended hours is an essential part of remaining open throughout the night. Security officers will circle the area several times throughout their shift.
Two staff members will be on duty during the night. The classified volunteers will receive time and a half compensation for their work. The overtime can then be used during the Christmas break instead of the annual leave employees normally take during the holiday break.
The library will only open the first floor during the extended hours. Students will need to gather information from the upper levels before the extended hours begin as there will be no students allowed upstairs. All reference materials available on the first floor will be open for use.
Strong said the library is running the extended hours on a per semester basis only.
“As long as we get students and staff, we will keep it.” Strong said.
“It is not a guaranteed every semester thing.”
In addition to their normal duties, the staff will conduct a census count of students every hour during the evening to determine the usage of the facilities.
Winnie Tong, ASBSU senator-at-large, said that student support is important to continue the program, and a large turn out of students will help make the extended hours a regular event during finals week.
“It’s really important to give thanks to the people that are running it,” Tong said.
The library will put up advertisements to inform students of the extended hours. Posters will be placed in the SUB and dorms, and table tents will be posted in the dining area of the SUB.
