The BSU women’s volleyball team is hosting a Champs of The Grass volleyball Tournament Fundraiser. The girls hope to raise some money to help take them to Europe next summer to play volleyball, as well as have some fun.
“It will be great competition and a great experience to play in another country,” said Coach Fred Sturm.
In order for the team to travel to Europe they have to raise around $2,000 per person, but they expect the tournament to attract over 30 teams.
“The more the better,” Sturm added.
The team has never had a tournament before and hopes this experience will bring more fans to their games next year. They averaged a mere 150 fans per game this season.
“This type of volleyball activity is a good way to involve the community and the contact is great for our players,” Sturm said.
Although the NCAA has explicit rules that don’t allow them to have a four-man team, the girls plan to make a two-man team and rotate players.
“We will be so busy running concessions and helping in various places that it would be hard for us to compete anyway,” said Christina Moore, a sophomore on the team. “Besides, if we do play, we don’t even get any prizes,” Moore joked.
If the girls raise enough money by next summer, they will travel to various places in Europe, play different teams and, if time permits, go sight seeing.
The Champs of The Grass Tournament is Saturday, May 4 starting at 8:30 a.m. between the SUB and the tennis courts. The teams consist of doubles and teams of four (doubles must be of the same gender-you may play coed in the men’s division, and teams of four are coed). If you sign up before April 27 the costs is $30 per team of four, and $16 per team of two, or you can show up early the day of the tournament and pay $36 per team of four, and $20 per team of two. Parking is free along the curbs of University Avenue and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each bracket. For more information contact Jacqueline Heler at 867-9461.
“It’s more than just a fundraiser, it’s going to be lots of fun, and it’s a great way to bring our community and school together, so we hope to see you there!” Moore adds.
