Boise, Idaho – Kicker Nick Calaycay was the star of Boise State’s second football scrimmage of the spring. The Bronco senior, who struggled last season making just 5-of-10 field goals, made 8-of-9 attempts Saturday including five 42-yarders.

The Bronco offense took better care of the ball than the first scrimmage, but the Bronco defense still controlled the play. Cornerback Julius Brown came up with the lone interception, but the Bronco defensive line pressured Boise State’s four quarterbacks totaling five sacks. Tim Hefty had two, while Ryan Nelson, Dane Oldham, and Jared Aurich had one sack each.

Junior quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie looked sharp leading the Broncos to a touchdown on the first possession. Dinwiddie hit junior David Mikell on an 8-yard touchdown pass to account for the only touchdown of the scrimmage. Dinwiddie completed 12-of-21 passes for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Freshman Rafe Espinoza finished with the highest quarterback rating (118.80) of the scrimmage after completing 3-of-5 passes for 35 yards on his one possession. Senior B.J. Rhode connected on 7-of-11 attempts for 84 yards and one interception. Sophomore Michael Sanford went 4-of-10 for 20 yards.

Senior Billy Wingfield led the Broncos with seven catches (all from Dinwiddie) for 68 yards. Jerry Smith caught four passes, while ten other receivers caught at least one pass.

Mikell led the Broncos on the ground with 14 yards on one carry. Senior Brock Forsey rushed seven times for 13 yards for the Broncos who gained just 26 yards rushing on 27 carries.
