From Right Field: Quit knocking tobacco and SUVs

Leftists always talk about freedom of choice.

Leftists claim that they are the proud defenders of the right to let individuals choose their own path. Of course, what leftists claim and what they actually believe are entirely different.

Just take the issue of smoking. Conservatives like myself say it is a person’s choice if they smoke or not. Cigarette warnings have been on packs of cigarettes for over 30 years now, so people have known the risks of smoking for over 30 years now. I would say that if somebody wants to smoke, let ‘em.

But leftists just won’t leave people alone so they can make this choice. Take Montgomery County, Maryland for example. The County Council just passed a law that says you are not allowed to smoke in your own house if neighbors can smell it. If a neighbor reports you to the police, you are fined $750. Amazing. They are fining free-thinking adults for choosing to use a legal product inside their own home! Unbelievable!

So much for defending the right to choose. Apparently smokers do not have rights anymore.

Look at what the left has done to tobacco companies. Governments sued them for distributing a legal product to people. I know, they lied about what they were putting in the cigarettes 40 years ago, but come on. People have had over 30 years to quit smoking. Instead of “nutting up” and quitting, they blame tobacco companies for “making” them smoke.

So tobacco gets sued to supposedly recover health care costs and to help educate people about the dangers of smoking. I’m surprised that you leftists that think the education budget is getting cut aren’t screaming at the capital building wondering where all of our tobacco money is.

Leftists love the government. They think the government is needed to protect us from the evil corporations in the world. Well, tell me something. If tobacco is so bad, why doesn’t the government ban it? If it is really killing all these thousands of people, why isn’t it banned?

Government doesn’t care about protecting the consumer. Government only cares about getting tax revenue to expand itself. Listen to the way the left and government talk about tobacco and tobacco companies. They accuse RJ Reynolds of poisoning children because they invented “Joe Camel.” If cigarettes are this deadly, make them illegal. Heroin is deadly and heroin is illegal. Cigarettes are supposedly just as addictive as heroin, so make them illegal.

Another freedom of choice that the left would like to take away is the freedom to decide people like to drive. I’ll tell you something. I am sick and tired of listening to all these whining leftists complain about SUVs. If you prefer a Yugo over an SUV, then go buy a Yugo and leave the rest of alone!

Leftists complain that SUVs are unsafe because they hurt people when they are involved in an accident. What nonsense. The people that get hurt are the ones driving the smaller, cheaper, lighter cars. If you want safer roads, make everybody drive SUVs. After all, SUVs have a better safety cage and protect people better than a Camry.

The biggest knock on SUVs is that they get lower gas mileage. Leftists say that SUVs destroy the environment. I saw the cars that leftists where driving up at the Rainbow Family gathering over the summer. A bunch of oil-burning, rusted out pieces of junk from yesteryear. These are the people telling us to buy better, more environmental friendly cars.

I am realizing what the left means by preserving freedom of choice. What they mean is you have the choice to live just how they say or be taxed heavily until you comply.
