Increase will price students out
“We don’t want to discourage students from attending school because of the cost” was a statement made by the Big Cheese himself, Dr. Charles Ruch (who last year received a $150,000 bonus). Well Chuck, that is exactly what you are going to do if you and your administration continue to price out potential students from receiving an education here at Boise State with increased student fee raises.
Rumor has it that members of you staff have been stating that if the fees do not get raised then faculty will have to be sacrificed, as well as building proposals such as the renovation of the Student Union Building. These rumors can upset even the most uninterested students who know that your staff members make three times as much as most faculty members. If there need to be cut backs and money raised to cover the potential deficit than Dr. Ruch and his administration should look at themselves and discover a way to take pay cuts or decreases in their salary, before putting all the weight and responsibility on the students (who in this corporate world would be the shareholders) of Boise State.
For a person who does not go without food, or better yet a person whom does not even have to cook his own food. Charles Ruch might have to consider that we as students do not make as much money as he does to eat steak and potatoes on a daily basis. To raise fees by 15 percent is a travesty to the educational system in this state. Karen McGee, the president of the State Board of Education, recommends that the university “look at cutting costs instead of raising fees.”
That should say something to the state and the educators. The State Board of Education has set a cap on the fee increase at 10 percent. This is so the hogs in the palace do not go for the jugular every year with the increase in the fees at the universities, and so those members of the community who choose to go to school have reasonable and fair shot at receiving an education. But as time goes by and the elites of the education system get more power, they choose to raise the fees, raise the price on parking permits, raise the price to live, therefore raising the level of discouragement to the students who will have to sacrifice not getting an education because the price is just too high. So we as students (17,000 strong) of this institution should question the motives of the President of this University Dr. Charles Ruch on his request to raise the fees to attend this school by 15 percent which will amount to around $400 next year.

Cut pay of BSU Administration
Once again, university officials prove they have no idea how to communicate ideas, thoughts or policies. Last week, after the almighty State Board of Education met, it was found out that President Ruch and his fellow cabinet members are proposing to increase student fees by 15 percent.
In my opinion, Dr. Peg Blake, who is the vice president of Student Affairs, should have disclosed this information to ASBSU, the student body, and the Arbiter. However, this was not the case. Dr. Blake and Dr. Ruch claim that the 15 percent issue was a last minute idea, that they were cornered at the meeting by reporters. Anyone who believes this explanation is na
