Boise State Volunteer Services Board will be holding a volunteer fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 in the Student Union.
Representatives of non-profit and service agencies will be recruiting students for volunteer service.
“The Volunteer Fair is a kick-off event for all VSB activities. It saves time for students who don’t have time to call the 20-plus groups who will be there,” Student Organizations Program Coordinator Mike Esposito said.
Esposito said the fair also serves as good public relations for the community, showing that BSU students care, and are willing to offer help to those in need.
Spencer Burton, VSB Director, said, “The turnout we have right now are students who have served in the past.”
These students come by regularly looking for work. VSB hopes to reach out to students who have not had opportunity to serve in the past, he said.
VSB coordinates service needs through four Issue Coordinators: Hunger and Homelessness, Youth and Education, Environmental concerns, and Health Care.
According to Burton, the Issue Coordinators are required to staff at least two program leaders.
“These people look at needs in the community, say, the rescue mission needs food,” said Burton, “then they would deliver food weekly or monthly.”
In November, VSB will sponsor “Into the Streets”, another opportunity for students to offer their time.
During this event, volunteer agencies will assemble in the SUB and offer service projects designed to last around three or four hours. Students would sign up and then fan out to complete the projects.
“These single-service opportunities allow students to sign up, work, and then they have done their good deed for the day,” said Esposito.
Throughout the semester, VSB will set up a marketing booth to advertise and allow students to browse the over 80 organizations who have requested BSU students’ help in their cause.
“Getting involved in service work has motivated me to do better work,” said Burton, “Helping the less fortunate has made me grateful for what I have.”
